Have a happy (fair trade) Easter

With Easter approaching let's consider what chocolate really means?

This year is the first year that chocolate giant Cadbury have released a fair-trade Easter Egg here in Australia. So what's the big deal?

Fair trade in the chocolate industry is not about price it's actually about children and the gross injustice of child labour and trafficking.  As stated by wikipedia it is estimated that 'up to 12,000 of the 200,000 children working in Ivory Coast, the world's biggest producer of cocoa' are working in the harsh conditions of cocoa production.

The 2001 report "A Taste of Slavery: How Your Chocolate May be Tainted" demonstrated how children are forcibly removed from their homes, work 100 hours a week, are beaten and are likely to be injured through the machete style production process.

So as we're handing out Easter Eggs to happy safe children let's consider children on the other side of the world who have an extremely different reality. For more information on where to purchase your fair trade chocolate go to Fair-trade Australia.
